Robert and Bernice Louie, descendants of the Okanagan Syilx people, are the Proprietors of the first fully indigenous, privately owned winery. The official grand opening happened in May of 2016 in West Kelowna and a few short years later the New York International Wine Competition awarded Indigenous World Winery with 2018 Okanagan Winery of the year.
The vision for Indigenous World Winery stems from a desire to create a community space where culture and friendship can be shared in fun environment. Inside the wine shop are Indigenous carvings, art, headdresses and many gift items offering an authentic aboriginal experience. Guests are invited to taste through a flight of five samples of our award winning wines while learning a little about the Louie family. After taking in the gorgeous views of the Okanagan Lake our guests are welcome to head downstairs and experience the modern native cuisine prepared by the Red Fox Club restaurant.
A unique aspect of Indigenous World Winery is the introduction of a sparkling wine program celebrating the women in the Louie family. The first sparkling wine released in 2016 saw a sparkling rosé named after Robert and Bernice’s youngest daughter. This was followed by the 2017 release named after their eldest daughter. Both wines were made with two special Charmat method tanks in the production facility. Finally, Bernice herself will have a sparkling wine named after her, this time in a traditional method style, completing the tier of incredible and very delicious sparkling wines.
